Quad
British Hi-Fi Engineering Since 1936
Quad was founded by Peter J. Walker in 1936 in London, operating initially under the name Acoustical Manufacturing Co. The brand relocated to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire during World War II and has remained there ever since — the same town, the same engineering philosophy, nearly nine decades on. The name itself tells the story: QUAD is an acronym for Quality Unit Amplifier Domestic — a standard Walker set for himself from the beginning. His guiding principle, that an amplifier should be nothing more than a straight wire with gain, became one of the most quoted axioms in high fidelity audio. Quad remains the only hi-fi company to have received the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement. The milestones speak for themselves. The Quad II Power Amplifier, introduced in 1953, set the benchmark for valve amplification and remained in production for 18 years. In 1956, Quad demonstrated the world's first true full-range electrostatic loudspeaker — a design that continues to define the brand's reputation for transparency and low distortion. Quad's current range carries that legacy forward: integrated amplifiers, preamplifiers, power amplifiers and loudspeakers built for listeners who want to hear the recording, not the equipment.
